Five Questions with John Hageman, CEO, Montana Credit Union

1. How do you describe your credit union when introducing it to someone for the first time?

We are a member-owned, not-for-profit cooperative governed by a volunteer board that wants the same thing as you—lower loan rates, higher savings rates, fewer fees, and great service!

2. What’s one thing that makes you most proud to be a leader of your credit union?

We’re different, and that is a good thing. I get compliments all the time about how our staff goes the extra mile to ensure their needs are met. Sometimes, it is taking additional time and effort, but other times, it is as simple as greeting them with a smile. Today, it doesn’t seem there are many businesses that put people in front of profit. I am proud to be a part of an organization that is pushing that philosophy forward.

3. When thinking about the future of your credit union, what’s your biggest concern or challenge?

I think the biggest challenge is sticking to our roots amid regulatory change and increased competition. There are so many pressures to grow to ensure sustainability. However, we have to remember what got us here – taking care of our members, one at a time.

4. What’s the #1 area of focus for your credit union as you plan for the next 12 months?

We have spent a lot of time defining our culture and reassessing our core values. We plan to roll out updated values to staff, which will provide a solid foundation as we go into our next strategic planning session.

5. What’s the biggest thing that makes your credit union stand out from the competition?

Our purpose. We are here to meet the needs of our members. Our tagline is “Guiding you ahead.” We live this out in many ways, from being innovative, providing competitive products and services, and empowering our members to achieve their financial goals.
